Louis XVI-style sideboard with Venetian Rococo decoration, early 20th century
A fine sideboard with a shaped marble top and a carved, lacquered and painted wooden body in the Venetian style, complete with a double central gilded cartouche on carved and gilded feet. The two front doors, flanked by allegorical figures in gilded and sculpted wood, and by tiles decorated with putti and flower motifs, conceal two large internal shelves and two drawers. The design of the sideboard draws its inspiration from the model of the famous 'La Commode Commandée' chest of drawers made by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) in 1775 for the private rooms of King Louis XVI at Versailles and now in the collections of the Musée Condé at Château de Chantilly. The author, who is unknown, reworked this model typical of the Louis XVI style by adding different decorative elements and a Venetian-style decoration with baroque lacquering. The cabinet is in excellent condition, requiring only a cleaning operation.
