Saratoga three-seater sofa by Massimo and Lella Vignelli for Poltronova, 1960s-70s. White wood structure and cherry red leather upholstery. It has some small and unavoidable chips on the lower wooden parts due to the handling of the furniture itself; the leather has signs of time but is not torn. Thanks to a scholarship obtained in 1958, Lella studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Architecture and worked as a junior designer at the prestigious firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill before returning to Italy and graduating in Architecture from the IUAV University of Venice in 1962. In 1957, she married designer Massimo Vignelli, with whom she founded Lella e Massimo Vignelli Ufficio di Design e Architettura in Milan, a studio focusing on product design, interior design and graphic design. In 1971, after settling permanently in the United States and after international experience at Unimark International, Massimo and Lella founded Vignelli Associates in New York, where Lella served as managing director. In 1985, to meet growing needs, the firm moved to a larger space on 10th Avenue. Throughout this period, Massimo and Lella continue to pursue an intense activity ranging from graphic design and fittings to product and furniture design, a field in which Lella is particularly brilliant, designing seating for brands such as Poltrona Frau, Poltronova and Acerbis International. Lella and Massimo would work together throughout their lives in various branches of design, winning countless awards and becoming an icon of twentieth-century design.Two children were born of their marriage, Luca (1963), a photographer, and Valentina (1966), an expert in textiles and fabrics. Poltronova company, founded in Agliana in 1957 by Sergio Cammilli flanked by partner Bonacchi.In 1958 Cammilli met Sottsass, who was then working as a ceramist for Bitossi, and they became great friends.They begin a decisive professional collaboration in creating the brand's vision. Sottsass serves as artistic director of the company until 1973.
