Item description

Baroque style painted terracotta putto head handmade in Sicily in the first half of the 20th century (1930s) in the city of Caltagirone, famous throughout the world for its handcrafted ceramics. This putto shows normal signs of use and age. The Baroque style originated in Italy in the early 17th century and is known for its elaborate ornamentation, dramatic effects and sense of movement. Baroque art is characterized by grandeur, contrast and a strong emphasis on emotion and this putto exhibits these characteristics. Sicily, being an island rich in history and cultural influences of various civilizations, has a unique artistic tradition. Cherubs were commonly used to symbolize innocence and divine love.
