Item description

Painting by Giuseppe Aureli depicting a portrait of his daughter Lydia, 1909. Giuseppe Aureli (Rome, 1858 - Anzio, 1929) trained at the Roman school under Cesare Maccari and his contemporary Pietro Garbini, who directed him toward historical painting. He made his debut in Naples in 1883 exhibiting "An Appointment for Hunting in the 1500"; the following year he put on display in Turin "Charge of Lancieri d'Aosta at the Battle of Custoza in 1866"; in Bologna he was present with Emanuele Filiberto returning to Turin after the Battle of St. Quentin. It is all a succession of international exhibitions from Munich to Paris, from London to New York, where he enjoys considerable success. In 1894 he began exhibiting with the watercolorists as a guest, finally joining the Society in 1900. He made numerous appearances at the Society's periodic exhibitions in the following years; at the 1903 exhibition he exhibited "Portrait of a Lady" and "The 18th-century Toilet," at the 1907 exhibition "Impending Storm," at the 1910 exhibition, having become a councilor of the Society, he exhibited "The Tale," "Oriental Portrait" and "Marina," at the 1912 exhibition "Sur la place," and at the 1913 exhibition he presented "Tripoli," "In the Oasis" and "At the Court of Henry III of France." Mindful of Maccari's lesson, he mainly treats the historical picture, succeeding particularly well in portraiture, always rendered with grace and great skill. He is also remembered for his great virtuosity in the use of the difficult watercolor technique. He participated in the Espos. Naz. Italiana in Turin in 1898, at the Esposiz. Naz. B. A. of Rimini in 1909 and in several exhibitions of the Amatori e Cultori Society of Rome from 1900 until 1926.
