Oil painting from the 18th century depicting the portrait of Marc'Antonio Zondadari, Grand Master of the Order of Malta. Marc'Antonio was born in Siena into the aristocratic Zondadari family on November 26, 1658, and his mother was Agnese Chigi. He studied in Parma at the Jesuits and, later, in Naples. He is destined to make a career in the Order of Malta, and so he will. His election to the office of Grand Master of the Order on January 13, 1720, is tantamount to assuming a crown. Malta is an independent state and the Grand Master is its sovereign. Marc'Antonio died in 1722; in his will he stipulated that his body be buried in La Valletta but that his heart be returned to Siena.
