This carpet with a light blue plain field and cascades of flowers on the sides is part of the Nichols carpet type. Walter Nichols, an American entrepreneur, was a pioneer in bringing high-quality carpet production to China during the interwar period. Nichols founded a carpet factory in Tianjin, China, and began producing Oriental-style carpets with unique, high-quality designs. Walter Nichols' carpets were distinguished by their intricate floral patterns, bright colours and finely crafted details. These carpets became very popular in the United States and Europe, where they were appreciated for their beauty and craftsmanship. The Nichols carpets produced in China represent an important chapter in the history of Oriental carpets and are still considered true works of textile art today.
