Item description
Genoese school of the 17th century. Oil on canvas depicting a dramatic religious scene, the crowning with thorns. It is the moment of Christ's passion following the flagellation, in fact we notice on the right the column to which he was tied during this torture. Before his death sentence the Roman soldiers humiliated him by dressing him in a purple cloak, made him hold a cane and placed a crown of thorns on his head to ridicule his claim to kingship. Painting of notable pictorial quality, in particular the masterful use of caravaggesque chiaroscuro. Splendid antique frame in carved and gilded wood, of great decoration. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and recovery of color in small spots, overall in excellent state of conservation. Painting light H 119 x W 97 cm.
