He was martyred for his Protestant faith, burned at the stake during the reign of Mary I, known as Bloody Mary, for his adherence to the Protestant faith. Hugh Latimer (ca. 1487–1555) was a Reformation leader in England, known for his powerful sermons and his role as Bishop of Worcester. He was burned at the stake along with Ridley in Oxford, also becoming a martyr to the Reformation. Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556) was the Archbishop of Canterbury and a central figure in the English Reformation. He was the author of the Book of Common Prayer and was executed for heresy in the reign of Mary I. Jean Calvin (1509–1564) was a French theologian and religious reformer, whose work and doctrine, Calvinism, profoundly influenced the form of Protestantism, especially in Switzerland, France, Holland and later in North America. John Knox (circa 1513 or 1514–1572) was a Scottish minister and key figure in the Scottish Reformation. He was the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland and played a decisive role in establishing a national Protestant church. Théodore de Bèze (1519–1605) was a French theologian, poet, and scholar, who played an important role as Calvin's disciple and successor in Geneva. He was influential as both a theologian and an educator during the Reformation period.
