Item description
Children's high chair by Gebrüder Thonet (Austria), second half of the 19th century. Structure in bent beech, seat and back in Vienna straw. Gebrüder Thonet is a historic furniture company, founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet in Boppard, Germany. A pioneer in wood bending technology, the company became famous for producing the No. 14 chair, also known as the "coffee chair", introduced in 1859. This revolutionary model used a few pieces of steam-bent wood, making the chairs light, durable and easily stackable, ideal for mass production. As its operations expanded into various European countries and the United States, Thonet consolidated its position as a leader in furniture design. During the 20th century, the company also began producing tubular steel furniture, collaborating with prominent designers such as Marcel Breuer and Le Corbusier, who helped define the aesthetics of modernism. Seat: 60 cm. The high chair is in very good condition, as can be seen from the attached photos. It shows normal traces of age and use visible in the photos and some small worm holes that are no longer active.
