Flemish school, St. Jerome in his study, oil on canvas, 17th century

Archived

Large Flemish painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil-on-canvas work with a very fine St. Jerome in his study. Father and Doctor of the Church, he was a famous scholar and translated the Gospels and the Old Testament into Latin. The saint is depicted in cardinal's robes reading a book in a small study filled with objects that testify to his erudition and interests. Some memento mori (literally, remember that you must die) also find their place, such as the extinguished candle, the hourglass and the skull that the Saint points to in the centre of the composition. A large window opens onto a beautiful landscape with figures and a small Nordic village in the background. A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, which can be seen in particular in the meticulous detailing of the study. Work that has undergone restoration with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in places. Overall in a good state of preservation, with some signs of time.
