Stunning Italian painting from the mid-18th century. Monumental-sized oil on canvas painting depicting a scene of great charm, Artemisia drinks the ashes of Mausolo. Legend has it that after building an imposing monument for her late husband (the so-called mausoleum), the woman decided to drink his ashes in the belief that no tomb could be more worthy of his body. The scene is set in a sumptuous 18th-century court, full of characters in fine robes gathered under an incredible canopy supported by twisting columns. The queen gazes mournfully at her husband's ashes placed in the bowl while countless pages and bridesmaids surround the throne despairing over what has happened and lending dynamism to the composition. Painting of extraordinary pictorial quality and bright colors attributable to Italian painter Gaspare Diziani (1689-1767), lacking authentication. Painting of considerable size, suitable for a large reception hall. Work that has been restretched and has undergone restoration with frame replacement and color restoration in some places. Overall in good state of preservation.
