Large Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting a rare sacred episode, the mystical marriage of Saint Dorothea. While being dragged to martyrdom she repeatedly invokes the name of her bridegroom Jesus. The pagans mock her and claim that they will only believe her if Dorothea sends flowers and fruit from beyond directly from her bridegroom's garden. In fact, in this rare composition, Christ honours Dorothea with a bouquet of flowers and three apples, while at the sides we find a host of splendid characters, such as Moses and St John the Baptist. A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, in fact the technical skill in the realisation of the draperies of the precious robes and every single naturalistic detail, particularly the still life at the feet of the Saints, should be emphasised. A work of monumental dimensions, ideal for a large salon or private chapel. Painting already restored with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in places. Overall in good state of preservation.
