Pair of armchairs with a wavy line, carved wooden part, upholstered back and seat. A pouf restored using the same velvet and upholstery completes the graceful parlour. Dark walnut wood, probably originating in the Orient but very common in Europe, is a hard wood with a beautiful grain, much used in antique furniture. It was a wood that was widely used in Italy throughout the Renaissance and was later widespread in Europe, especially in England, until the advent of mahogany. It was used for solid wood furniture and sometimes carvings and inlays. In France, it was more widely used in the provinces. In the second half of the 18th century its use declined considerably because mahogany and other exotic woods were preferred.
