Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The German painter Oesterley devoted himself mainly to Nordic landscape painting, in his last period especially to Norwegian landscapes (with fjords and snow-capped mountains). In this work, however, he proposes almost a genre scene, albeit set in a distinctly Nordic landscape: within a dense woodland, perhaps a forest, a pair of young peasants are crossing a stream, with the boy chivalrously carrying the maiden in his arms. The two figures enliven the landscape with their colours and the joy they express. The painting is presented in a stylish frame.
