After Lafitte, Love & Psyche, Dufour Grisailille, 19th century

French painting of the first half of the nineteenth century. Tempera on paper on paper in Grisailille (a monochrome technique) depicting a great fascinating mythological episode, the Psyche's parents consult the oracle of Apollo. This is a work created by the French manufacture Dufour and taken from the drawings of Louis Lafitte and Merry Joseph Blondel. In this case, two particular panels in the series were combined and framed to create a complete composition (see photo). Legend has it that the parents of Psyche, desperate to not be able to find a husband worthy of his divine beauty, go to consult the oracle of Apollo. The answer will be tragic: the girl will have to be brought to a cliff and her bridegroom will be a monster that even the gods fear. This is the prelude to the legendary story between love (Cupid) and psyche taken from Apuleio's metamorphosis. In the composition we find all the protagonists of the story, the storm parents embrace the daughter and turn to the statue of the God Apollo, while Eros observes the scene secretly. Knocked and lacquered wooden frame, of beautiful decoration. Work already restored with rhoreel and replacement of the frame, overall in good conservative state. Painted light h 189 x l 106.5 cm.
