Item description

We kindly invite you to read the full description, as it provides detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. This elegant and distinctive pair of Italian walnut nightstands was handcrafted between 1930 and 1935 in an artisan workshop in Cantù, a town in the Lombardy region, near Como. Cantù has long been celebrated for its fine furniture-making tradition and is recognized as an important center for high-end craftsmanship, known for producing luxury furnishings for an elite clientele—including private residences, prestigious hotels, and upscale interior design projects worldwide. Each nightstand features a refined black glass top, positioned above a practical drawer. Beneath the drawer is a spacious compartment divided by an interior shelf and enclosed by a gracefully curved door. Both the drawer and the door are adorned with original ivory-colored Bakelite handles, adding a distinctive decorative touch. The front base of each piece includes a continuous support element, while the rear rests on two squared feet. The doors and drawer fronts are box-constructed using a technique that reduces overall weight without compromising volume or structural integrity. These nightstands were constructed from standard walnut wood and then veneered with high-quality feather walnut—one of the most prized wood species, known for its elegant, natural grain pattern resembling feathering. This decorative effect is achieved by slicing the trunk lengthwise where it splits into branches, creating a symmetrical, visually striking design. Veneering is an ancient woodworking technique in which thin layers of fine wood are applied to a solid wood base. For these nightstands, the veneer used is thicker than average (typically between 1 and 2 millimeters), adding durability and value. The premium walnut veneer is hand-applied with a special adhesive, then pressed and allowed to dry to ensure a firm bond between the layers. Once set, the surface is meticulously finished through sanding, polishing, and the application of protective coatings such as varnishes or oils—enhancing both the appearance and longevity of the wood. This time-honored technique dates back to ancient Egypt and China and has evolved over the centuries into a cornerstone of fine furniture-making, especially for luxury items and collectible pieces. In this pair of nightstands, the craftsmanship and use of feather walnut highlight the natural hues, grain patterns, and flame-like figuring of the wood, resulting in a highly sophisticated aesthetic. The entire wooden structure has been fully hand-restored by our team of expert artisans and is in excellent overall condition. Dimensions: Width 21.65 in (55 cm), Depth 12.6 in (32 cm), Height 21.65 in (55 cm). For all our shipments, we use professional, custom packaging materials (wooden crates, foam, etc.) to ensure maximum protection and safety during transport.
