Antique French painting from the mid-19th century. Oil on canvas work of good pictorial quality that develops horizontally, of great size and impact. Painting depicting The Aldobrandini Wedding, an ancient copy of the famous Roman fresco from the first century BC, rediscovered in 1605 on the Esquiline and purchased two centuries ago by the Vatican (exhibited in the Aldobrandini room of the Vatican Apostolic Library).
In the center of the composition the bride is depicted with Venus next to her (on her left) and Hymen sitting immediately next to her (on the right). On the sides we find several characters busy preparing for the wedding. On the left a veiled matron controls the temperature of the water (see photo). On the right, a girl plays the harp while another, immediately next to her, burns perfumes for the ceremony (see photo).
20th century carved and gilded wooden frame (bronze colour). Ideal work to place in a large living room, bedroom or study, for antique dealers and interior designers. Painting that has undergone a conservative restoration with the positioning of two visible patches on the back (see photo). Painting with some small loss of color (see photo), in a beautiful patina. Overall painting in good condition. Light painting H 75.5 x W 172 cm.
