Item description

Wonderful pair of 18th century Flemish paintings. Oil on canvas works depicting two splendid live natures, the lion hunt and the bird hunt. In the first, the king of the savannah vehemently confronts a pack of hunting dogs, in the second the violence is transformed into a swirl of feathers, in an aquatic landscape vibrant with movement and light. Both are inscribed in the great Flemish tradition of hunting scenes that were very successful in the Netherlands in the Baroque era. The compositional scheme, the anatomical tension and the accentuated dynamism of the animals reveal a clear reference to the work of Frans Snyder and his student Jan Fyt. The palette, warm and bright, uses brown, ocher and green tones typical of the Antwerp school. It is plausible that he was a follower of Jan Fyt active in Belgium in the first half of the 18th century. It is rare to find a homogeneous pair of hunting subjects of such balance and quality. The contained format then makes them extremely versatile and easy to set in classic or modern contexts. Spectacular 20th century frames in lacquered and gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Works already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Light paintings H 32 x W 44 cm.
