This magnificent pendulum, made of finely chased bronze and mercury gilded, is a sumptuous example of the typical taste of the French Restoration period (Charles X era).
Features and Style
Subject: The composition is centered on the figure of Diana (Artemis), the Roman goddess of hunting, the moon and wild nature. Diana is depicted standing here, in an elegant and melancholic pose, dressed in a short tunic (chiton) and animal skins, and leaning on a spear. Next to her, a faithful hunting dog (greyhound or hound) sits guardingly, recalling the classical iconography of the goddess.
Case: The clock case consists of a rectangular base raised on four feral-legged ('lion's feet') feet decorated with acanthus leaf scrolls. The upper section features a plinth on which the statue and clock rest.
Base Decorations: The front of the base is embellished with a rich applied frieze in a tropheistic style, celebrating the theme of hunting. The following are distinguished:
A crown of oak leaves surrounding a boar's head, symbol of noble prey.
A crisscross composition of hunting weapons, including spears and a bow, surrounded by laurel and oak branches.
Below, a molded border with a stylized foliage or palmette pattern.
Dial: The dial, circular in shape, is set in a parallelepiped block and features a rich decorative frame with floral scrolls. It features black Roman numerals on a gold and chiseled background, with burnished steel hands. Below the dial, an additional depiction of a deer or fallow deer adds depth to the hunting scene.
