Ancient Flemish painting from the 17th century. Oil painting on panel depicting the biblical scene of Christ's tunic being played by lot. The soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and played dice at the foot of the cross. The work was attributed by the art historian Fred Meijer, an expert on Dutch art, to the Flemish painter known under the name "Monogrammist H.C."
This artist active in the Netherlands in the 17th century and known for his genre scenes is identified as the signature of the Antwerp artist Willem Van Herp (1614-1677). (The painting is not currently accompanied by expertise but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). The painting combines the emotional power of the Flemish tradition with an intense baroque atmosphere.
