Splendid Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, recognizable by the cogwheel of martyrdom in the foreground. A princess from Alexandria in Egypt refused any earthly marriage, declaring that she was already the bride of Christ. During a mystical vision, the Virgin appeared to her with the child, who placed a ring on her finger, sealing an eternal spiritual union.
The scene is set in an intimate and domestic context, with the characters represented in simple and contemporary clothes, according to a humanized reading attributable to the Lombard context of the mid-17th century. The composition, of notable pictorial quality, is characterized by a warm and enveloping light and a natural rendering of the figures. We see on the left the Saint offering her hand and the gesture of the ring offered by Jesus. Behind her a man in chain mail looks at the scene, presumably a portrait of the client. The child is held in the loving arms of the Madonna while in the background we glimpse Saint Joseph.
A rare work with a strong spiritual intensity, ideal for prestigious, classic and modern environments. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with various signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in some places. Overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 99 x W 75 cm.
