French painting, Hagar and Ishmael, 19th century
Fine French painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, first canvas, depicting a highly fascinating biblical scene, Hagar with the young Ishmael in a desert landscape. An Egyptian slave and mother of Abraham's firstborn, Hagar was expelled together with her son Ishmael on the orders of Sarah, the Prophet's first wife. Wandering in the desert, mother and son suffer thirst until God intervenes by sending an angel to save them. The composition is balanced, the drawing accurate, while the arid landscape and earthy colors accentuate the drama of the narrative. The painting combines narrative feeling with a sober stylistic language. Of particular value is the contemporary frame in wood and gilded plaster which enhances the work, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging and small lacks of decoration on the external border. Perfect for classic or eclectic environments, this canvas is a significant example of the French nineteenth-century tradition. Painting that has undergone a conservative restoration with the application of small patches on the back (see photo) and color recovery in some places. Overall, the painting has a beautiful patina and is in a good state of conservation. Light painting H 90.5 x W 71.5 cm.
