Oil on canvas. The work draws on the style popularized throughout Europe by Jakob Ferdinand Voet, a Flemish painter who established himself primarily as a portraitist and enjoyed a wide following among artists of his time and later periods. His half-length portraits focus all attention on the subject, who emerges from a dark, neutral background. The portrait of a lady presented here has previously been restored and relined. It is presented in a period frame.
