19th century Tuscan School-
mis. h.133.5 cm - l.54.5 cm
St. John the Evangelist: The bearded man on the left, holding a book and making a gesture of blessing, is often associated with St. John the Evangelist, author of the Gospel.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria: The woman on the right, holding a palm tree (symbol of martyrdom) and having a cogwheel (symbol of her martyrdom) at her feet, is almost certainly Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Background: This type of artwork is common in Italian painting, particularly between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and is often found in altarpieces.
