"Splügen Bräu" Suspension Lamp by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos (1961)
An icon of Italian design of the 1960s, the "Splügen Bräu" pendant lamp, created by the visionary brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos in 1961, is an emblematic example of their ability to blend functionality, irony and a surprisingly modern aesthetic.
The history of this splendid lamp has its roots in a specific project: the furnishing of the Splügen Bräu Bar, a Milanese pub conceived by the Castiglionis as a meeting place where modern furnishing elements interacted with antique pieces. Precisely for this unique environment, the Castiglioni brothers designed a suspension lamp that could fit with personality into this eclectic context.
The result was a lamp made entirely of turned and mirror-polished aluminium. Its distinctive shape is composed of a series of concentric rings, overlapping with an almost sculptural precision. This layered structure creates a dynamic play of reflections and light, diffusing both direct downward and indirect upward lighting, thanks to the reflectivity of the metal.
The "Splügen Bräu" quickly became an iconic piece of the Flos catalogue, transcending its specific origin to establish itself as a symbol of innovative and sophisticated Italian design. Its sculptural form and the brilliance of aluminum make it a focal point in any environment, from residential to commercial, keeping its modernist charm intact decades later.
