Item description

Oil painting on canvas by the Austrian painter Joseph Weidner. The painting is dated 1826, the date is reported by the painter himself under his signature. The subject is the Virgin Mary, which makes this painting very rare from a collector's point of view as the painter is famous for his portraits but a sacred painting of his has never been seen for sale. The artist, born in 1801, was 25 years old when he created this painting and even more importantly, 1826 was the year in which the young Joseph began to exhibit his works. Weidner was one of the greatest exponents of the Biedermeier style in 19th century Vienna. From 1815 he was a student of the Vienna Academy and in 1826 he became famous with his first exhibitions. Ferdinand Waldmuller, married the artist's sister and influenced his technique. Between 1826 and 1827, following the success of his first exhibitions, he traveled to Russia, staying in Moscow and St. Petersburg, creating numerous portraits for the court. Today his works belong to the collections of numerous museums. A further point in favor of the painting proposed here is the frame which is the original one of the time, created by Adolf Wagrandl who had the workshop in Wiedner Hauptstrasse 84. The portrait has undergone 2 restoration interventions, one more recent and one older on the back of the canvas as seen in the photos. Frame measurements: 36.2 x 42.2 x 6.5 cm Canvas measurements: 23.8 x 30 x 1.6 cm
