This fascinating cinerary urn, or monumental incense burner, is a fine example of oriental decorative art, probably of Chinese or Sino-Tibetan origin, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries (late Qing dynasty or Republic period). The object is entirely sculpted in dark hard stone, probably soapstone, characterized by a rich brown patina with natural veins that accentuate its ancient appearance.
The structure is dominated by a classical and symbolic iconography: the lid is surmounted by an imposing Lion of Fo (or Fu dog) which claws the traditional perforated sphere, a symbol of protection and dominion. The central body, globular in shape, has handles in the shape of elephant heads and friezes in relief with minor lions playing with the flaming pearl, while the entire composition rests on a finely carved tripod base. The workmanship, which alternates smooth parts with meticulous details in the manes and paws, suggests high-quality craftsmanship intended for the antiques market or as a domestic ceremonial piece.
