This refined soapstone sculpture depicts Fu Xing, the Taoist deity who personifies Happiness and Luck, belonging to the famous group of the three Sanxing wise men. The work portrays the deity with the traditional scholar's robes and the characteristic long beard, holding in his arms a child who is also holding a peach, a universal symbol of longevity and health.
The statue rests on a darker stone base, skillfully carved to simulate a natural rock formation with traceries that give lightness to the composition. The processing of the soapstone, typical for its waxy consistency and delicate grey-green shades, highlights particular attention in the fluid drapery of the robes and in the expressive details of the faces.
Considering the executive style and the type of integrated base, the object can be traced back to the Chinese artistic production of the second half of the 20th century, approximately around 1960-1970, a period in which these auspicious icons were created with great skill for the international collecting market.
