This is a Chinese soapstone sculpture depicting Shoulao, the Taoist god of longevity. The figure is immediately recognizable by his high, domed forehead, long gnarled staff and the peach of immortality in his hand.
The work most likely dates back to the first half of the 20th century (period of the Republic or early People's Republic), an era in which the production of these objects for export was very flourishing. The workmanship shows discreet detail in the folds of the robes and in the smiling face, while the darker stone base is carved with a classical Greek motif. This is not an imperial antique, but a typical and pleasant example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship intended for the Western collector market.
