Important Spanish painting from the mid-17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting an episode taken from the Gospel of Luke, the appearance of Christ to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. The work captures a moment before the famous dinner, an episode rarely represented. On the same day of the resurrection two disciples are leaving Jerusalem headed for the village of Emmaus.
They are desperate for the death of the Messiah, but while they are walking a traveler reaches them and explains the Scriptures to them, rekindling their inner flame. They will only recognize Jesus later during dinner, when he breaks the bread, but the truth is emerging and this is precisely the moment depicted in the canvas. A painting of notable pictorial quality, particularly noteworthy is the rendering of the hands and drapery. The disciples are represented as pilgrims, with naturalism and a strong psychological introspection, while the face of Christ is instead idealized.
Spectacular 20th century wooden frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Painting of great spiritual suggestion, ideal for elegant, classic or contemporary reception environments. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 62.5 x W 86.5 cm.
