Refined Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the penitent Saint Jerome, one of the four Doctors of the church. The Saint is represented half-length, with a naked torso, wrapped in a magnificently painted cloth. In his right hand he holds a stone, an instrument with which he beat his chest as a sign of mortification. In his left hand he holds a large open book, presumably the Latin translation of the Bible that he himself created.
Next to him we can glimpse a wooden cross while a trumpet appears above, an iconographic reference to the Last Judgment. The face is the true emotional center, the gaze is intense and the beard is flowing, rendered with vibrant and luminous brushstrokes. Hermit and humanist, supreme example of harmony between ancient knowledge and Christian virtue, he was a subject dear to the aristocratic public, often illustrated in small-sized works intended for private devotion.
Painting of notable pictorial quality which belongs to the context of central-northern Italian painting of the mid-seventeenth century. Work of strong spiritual and decorative impact, perfect for a private study or library, ideal for collectors of Italian Baroque painting. Splendid 20th century frame in gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots, overall in a good state of conservation. Painting light H 82 x W 66 cm.
