Item description

Elegant Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on panel work depicting one of the most beloved subjects of Christian devotion, the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The saint had decided not to marry anyone and to consecrate her life to Christ and had a vision: the Madonna appeared with the child, who, as a sign of spiritual union, placed a ring on her finger. The composition presents the Virgin sitting while supporting Jesus, who offers the ring to the kneeling young woman, a martyr princess recognizable by the crown on her head and the palm of martyrdom. The work stands out for the sweetness of the faces and the refined chromatic harmony, elements that refer to the Emilian tradition and Correggio's models. The scene is constructed with great balance between the figures, illuminated by a soft light that enhances the complexions and drapery. The painting is embellished with a rich carved and gilded wooden frame from the 20th century which enhances its decorative character, with some signs of aging. Ideal work for collectors of sacred paintings from the high period or for those who wish to insert a painting with a strong symbolic and spiritual value into a refined environment. Painting already restored with color recovery in some places, overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 25 x W 32.5 cm.
