Lithograph New entrance door and station of Porta Vittoria ex Borgo della Stella (Project) by Giuseppe Elena, 1840
Giuseppe Elena (Codogno 1801 - Milan 1867) was an Italian engraver who achieved a prominent place in the history of lithography in Milan. Abandoned the seminary studies entered the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera where he distinguished himself as a miniaturist and in 1826 he won the competition of the second class of figure for the invention of the drawing. Opened, from 1827 until 1831, in his home a lithographic print shop in order to specialize in this figurative field and once ceased the activity between 1835 and 1845, will devote himself to his lithographs that develop themes on city life or views of gender. Arrigoni (1974) lists in the catalog about 350 lithographs, and such a production makes the artist a chronicler of the life and environment of Lombardy and Milan at the time. In this lithograph drawn by Giuseppe Elena is represented the project of the Engineer in Chief Mr. Milani, never realized, for the new entrance door and station of Milan. The sheet, curious testimony of how it could have been a part of the city, in particular the Borgo della Stella, was printed at the lithographic establishment Saturnino Brison (1791 - 1848) and Corbetta Francesco (1815 -). In the foreground we see minutely described through games and chiaroscuro contrasts a group of houses with crumbling walls, in the middle an omnibus, dogs and people walking. In the background, an open carriage travels along a raised road. Beyond the buildings, the station is dazzled by the sun, flags stand out over the central buildings, wagons and people crowd the adjacent spaces, and in the distance, amidst rich vegetation, a running train with steam smoke rising toward the sky. At the bottom beyond the image title and dedication to Duke Uberto Visconti di Modrone Chamberlain of His Majesty Imperial Regia Ap. Another example is kept in Milan, Civiche Raccolte Grafiche e Fotografiche.
