Description: Saint Apollonia is a saint of the Catholic Church and of the Orthodox Churches, venerated as a virgin and martyr. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt in the 3rd century and lived in a community of virgins consecrated to God. In 249, during the persecution of the emperor Decius, she was captured by pagans who broke her teeth with pincers and threatened to burn her alive if she did not renounce her faith. Saint Apollonia, preferring to die rather than deny Christ, spontaneously threw herself into the fire, offering her life as a testimony of love. The martyrdom of Saint Apollonia occurred in a context of violence and hatred towards Christians, who were accused of being responsible for the calamities that afflicted the Roman Empire. What unleashed the popular fury was a fortune teller who incited the crowd to attack the followers of Christ. Saint Apollonia, together with other Christians, was targeted by persecutors, who cruelly tortured her. Her teeth were pulled out with pincers, a symbol of her purity and wisdom, and other atrocious suffering was inflicted on her. Then she was ordered to utter sacrilegious words, otherwise they would throw her into the fire. Saint Apollonia, instead of giving in to fear, freed herself from their hands and threw herself into the flames, dying as a heroic martyr. Measurements: 80x105cm. Provenance: Italy 18th century.
