Cesare Laurenti was a multifaceted artist, very important in the history of applied arts in Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, oscillating between easel painting, wall decoration, sculpture, illustration, architecture, engraving, monumental ceramics, restoration, technical experimentation and antiquarian trade.
His first production was influenced by Domenico Morelli, whose pupil he was in Naples; some realist tastes were inspired by rural scenes, with shepherdesses and flocks, like the one presented here.
His artistic activity subsequently moved towards a more symbolist production, with experiments with different artistic techniques.
The work is presented in a period frame.
