Round table with central foot attributable to the Rolese manufacture.
It is universally recognized for its extraordinary skill in the art of wooden inlay, and this piece fully embodies its technical and aesthetic characteristics, typically placing itself in the production of the second half of the nineteenth century (full Louis-Philippe / Second Empire period).
Analysis of the Plan
The circular plane is the decorative fulcrum of the object, characterised by a complex geometric and figurative score with concentric circles:
The Central Medallion: Depicts the iconic scene of Saint George and the dragon. The saint is depicted on horseback, his cloak moved by the wind, piercing the dragon at the foot of the mount with his spear. The inlay shows excellent skill in the play of wood grain, used to give depth and chiaroscuro to the figure.
The Geometric Bands: The medallion is enclosed by a series of borders typical of Rolo's repertoire:
A first band with a three-dimensional geometric Greek (or meander) pattern, which creates a strong optical break.
A second outer band decorated with a radial "dentils" or "diamond points" pattern (commonly called a triangle frieze).
The Outer Edge: The outermost section of the top is veneered in blond walnut burl with radial segments, delimited on the perimeter by a refined two-tone herringbone thread. The edge of the thickness (the fascia) takes up the same workmanship with an inclined comb pattern.
The Support (Stem and Base)
The load-bearing structure develops according to the typical canons of the "tripod" or guéridon coffee table:
The Central Stem: It is turned and shaped with bulbous and spool elements. The central section features a fine inlay with vertical geometric micro-inlay (squares and threads), a high-quality detail that differentiates the more refined pieces of the factory from the more serial ones.
The Tripod: The base is supported by three feet moved in a "voluta" or "S" shape (Louis-Philippe style), which ensure stability by slenderizing the figure. The upper face of each foot is also embellished with an inlaid reserve that takes up the geometric patterns of the shaft.
Materials and Finish
Wooden essences: Main structure in walnut (in the typical warm and blonde hue), combined with fruitwood and boxwood to create the chiaroscuro chromatic contrasts of the inlaid decorations.
Status and Finish: The coffee table features shellac spirit polishing applied with a pad, which enhances the shine of the grain and protects the inlay
Dimensions: diameter 69, height 68 cm.
