Description: Antique oil painting on canvas with contemporary frame depicting Hecce Homo belonging to the early 19th century.
Christ is depicted in a half-length portrait turned three-quarters to the right with his head tilted back and his gaze turned upwards in search of divine and spiritual contact.
In his hands, partially visible at the bottom right, he holds diagonally a swamp cane used by Roman soldiers as a fake royal scepter to taunt him.
The crown of thorns intertwined thickly on the head accentuates the drama of the moment and the physical pain while maintaining a strong ideal and aesthetic composure.
The light is Caravaggio-style and comes from an external source at the top left and diagonally strikes the face and bust of Christ, modeling the muscular volumes and creating a clear chiaroscuro contrast between the darkness of the background and the brightness of the flesh.
