Item description

Dimensions : H78 x W105 x D55 Color : black Material : iron Style : design Rare and precious reproduction from the 19th century of the famous "Transat Chair", designed by none other than the world-renowned Irish designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976). Only 12 (!) original copies of this Art Deco and Bauhaus design icon were produced, and nearly all have disappeared into private collections or museums. We only know of one example that was sold at auction in 2016 for the sum of 1.5 million dollars. In this specific case, the "Transat Chair" we offer is not a cheap copy — as can unfortunately be found from time to time on the market — but a high-quality reproduction dating from the mid-1970s, an already very rare item that is difficult to find these days. That is why we have chosen to keep it in its original condition, absolutely intact, despite the presence of a few small chips on the black lacquered frame. Furthermore, all the metal parts of this chair have been made from beautifully crafted nickel-plated brass, unlike the chrome metal used for "cheap" copies. Its headrest, with its beautiful lines and adjustable angle, can be adjusted to provide an optimal comfort position. Designed in 1927 as a deck chair for the famous villa E-1027 — located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, which she shared with her partner, the Romanian architect Jean Badovici — the "Transat Chair" takes its name from the abbreviation of "Transatlantic", in reference to steamship voyages and the deck chairs commonly used aboard these ships. The "Transat Chair" has become one of the most important emblematic pieces of Eileen Gray's work.
