The Womb Chair was designed by Eero Saarinen in 1946 at the request of Florence Knoll, who wanted an armchair that offered absolute comfort: "like a basket filled with cushions." Saarinen's solution took the form of a revolutionary creation: a sculptural and enveloping seat that allows for multiple relaxing postures, made possible by a moulded fibreglass shell and a foam-padded interior.
This example, produced by Knoll / Switzerland in the 1960s, has been reupholstered with the "Tignes" fabric, a luxurious faux fur from the French textile house Casal. This thick, long-pile fabric, soft to the touch and in a warm brown hue, gives the piece both texture and warmth.
An iconic timeless piece of modern design, the Womb Chair reflects Saarinen's interest in organic forms and user-centred comfort; it remains one of the most recognisable and influential creations from the Knoll house.
