Important Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the famous biblical episode of Moses saved from the waters, referable to the Venetian school and attributable, due to stylistic affinities and a plate on the frame, to the great painter Nicola Grassi (1682-1748). The scene represents the moment in which Pharaoh's daughter, accompanied by her entourage of handmaids, finds the newborn Moses along the banks of the Nile.
Nicola Grassi was among the most interesting protagonists of Venetian painting of the early eighteenth century. Influenced by the lessons of Piazzetta and the lyricism of Pittoni, he contributed to the diffusion of an elegant language, characterized by compositions of theatrical taste, soft chiaroscuro effects and brilliant chromatic research. His works are today preserved in large museums such as the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice and the Galleria d'Arte Antica in Udine, where an entire room is dedicated to his production (the painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs).
A painting of notable pictorial quality which stands out for its broad and harmonious composition. The artist constructs the scene through a rich but perfectly balanced palette, dominated by intense reds and whites, the elegant blues of the princess's cloak and the delicate golden tones of the landscape. The light, diffused and soft, models the volumes naturally, while the drapery, described with great pictorial sensitivity, embellish the composition with a refined play of folds and reflections. Of particular interest is also the psychological performance of the characters, capable of spontaneously conveying surprise, compassion and participation.
The quality of the execution, combined with the pleasant color and the timeless charm of the subject, makes the work a choice of particular interest both for the collector looking for paintings of the Venetian school and for those who wish to insert a painting of strong historical and decorative value into a prestigious environment. The painting is further embellished with a 19th century golden wooden frame, perfectly harmonized with the taste of the work, with some signs of aging. Already subjected to a careful restoration including re-lining, replacement of the frame and limited localized pictorial reproductions, the canvas is today in a good state of conservation.
