Item description

Important French painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas attributed to the famous French painter Henri Félix Emmanuel Philippoteaux (1815-1884), signed “H.P.” bottom right, depicting a monumental battle scene of extraordinary visual impact. The composition represents the impetuous assault of a French infantry department advancing through the smoke of artillery with rifles armed with bayonet, while the ground is strewn with wounded soldiers and downed horses. In the background, immersed in dense clouds of dust and smoke, an officer on horseback observes the evolution of the clash, giving depth and breadth to the entire scene. Henri Philippoteaux was one of the most important history and battle painters of nineteenth-century France. A pupil of the famous Léon Cogniet, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1833 and during his career he received prestigious official commissions from King Louis Philippe for the Musée de l'Histoire de France of the palace of Versailles. His production is mainly dedicated to the Napoleonic campaigns, the Crimean War, the French colonial wars and the great events of national history, addressed with extraordinary documentary rigor and a strong narrative impact. His works are today preserved in some of the most prestigious French and international museum institutions, including the Musée de l'Armée in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London The work highlights all the qualities of his painting: a composition constructed with great balance, a vigorous brushstroke capable of transmitting movement, a refined palette played on earthy and blue-grey tones and a skilful alternation of light and shadow that amplifies the dramatic sense of the action. The smoke from the explosions becomes an essential element of the perspective construction, fusing figures and landscape in a vision of great scenic effectiveness. A painting of large dimensions and of great collectible appeal, ideal for collections dedicated to military painting, perfect for prestigious environments, classic or contemporary, in which it can express all its scenographic strength. The painting has been professionally restored with relining, replacement of the frame and limited color recovery in correspondence with small pictorial gaps. Overall, it is in a good state of conservation.
