Important Italian painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil work on canvas signed Carlo De Notaris (1812-1888), depicting a highly fascinating biblical episode, the prophet Daniel who reveals to Cyrus the deception of the priests of Baal.
Notaris was one of the main interpreters of nineteenth-century Lombard historical and religious painting. Trained under Carlo Bellosio, he continuously participated in the exhibitions of the Brera Academy, distinguishing himself with great compositions characterized by a rigorous academic structure and a notable narrative ability.
King Cyrus was convinced that the god Baal actually consumed the offerings placed in the temple every night. Daniel, certain that it was a deception, had the floor sprinkled with ashes before the sanctuary was closed. The following morning the offerings had disappeared, but the footsteps of the priests who had entered secretly remained imprinted on the ash. The prophet indicates the floor with a decisive gesture while the king, richly dressed, bends down in disbelief to observe the footprints that lead to the secret passage under the altar.
The scene is set inside a monumental oriental temple, characterized by imposing columns, colossal statues, hieroglyphic inscriptions and precious furnishings. The work stands out for the grandeur of the scenographic layout and the accurate reconstruction of the setting. The chromatic richness of the fabrics, the precision in the rendering of the surfaces and the care dedicated to the decorative details testify to the high technical quality of the author.

Large gilded wooden frame from the 20th century, perfectly in harmony with the character of the work, with some signs of aging.
