Important French painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting Joseph and Putiphar's wife, an intense episode taken from the book of Genesis.
The scene captures the culminating moment of the biblical story. Putiphar's wife, sitting half naked on the bed, tries to hold Joseph by grabbing his cloak, while the young man, faithful to his master and determined not to give in to temptation, leaves the room. The dress left in the woman's hands will soon become the false evidence with which she will accuse him of having used violence against her, causing his unjust incarceration.
The painter concentrates the entire narrative tension in the cloth disputed between the protagonists. The female figure, wrapped in a large golden yellow drapery, emerges with pale skin in front of the deep red curtain, while Joseph, elegantly dressed in a splendid blue robe, already appears to be leaning towards escape. At the center of the composition appears a wonderful little dog, a non-random detail that can be interpreted as a symbol of loyalty: that maintained by Joseph towards his master and, by contrast, that broken by Putiphar's wife.
The work presents characteristics attributable to the French pictorial culture of the second half of the seventeenth century. The idealized elegance of the figures, the softness of the complexions, the narrative clarity and the theatrical taste of the composition refer to the tradition of the great masters from beyond the Alps.
Of particular quality are Giuseppe's youthful face, the luminous rendering of the female body and the wide unfolding of the fabrics, treated with a rich variety of folds and color contrasts. The dark background enhances the figures and accentuates the intimate character of the scene, transforming the biblical episode into a refined moral drama set inside a sumptuous alcove.
The painting is placed in a spectacular ancient, non-coeval frame in carved and gilded wood, capable of effectively enhancing its strong scenic presence. An ideal painting for a reception hall or a professional studio, a work capable of attracting the eye both for its extraordinary pictorial quality and for the psychological complexity of the story.
Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation.
