Refined Spanish portrait from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas depicting King Charles II of Spain, in ceremonial armor and with the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the highest and most coveted honor in Europe.
The work takes up the official iconography developed in the Madrid court, taking inspiration from the famous models of the court painter Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614-1685). The young sovereign of the House of Habsburg is represented with long loose hair, splendid armor and the precious chivalric collar, culminating with the pendant depicting the legendary Golden Fleece.
The painting stands out for its remarkable executive quality, evident in the delicate modeling of the complexion, in the soft rendering of the hair and in the convincing representation of the metallic reflections of the armour. The dark background helps to give particular prominence to the figure, accentuating its solemn and representative character.
The painting is inserted in an elegant wooden frame shaped in Baroque style, not contemporary, but which effectively enhances the decorative aspect of the whole.
