Item description

Etching Shepherd with flock by Carlo Casanova (Cremona 1871 - Quarna sotto 1950), 1915. Italian painter and engraver. After an initial education at the Barnabiti College in Moncalieri, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering (Pavia and Padua), but only for a short time. From a young age he was so fascinated by the world of art that he moved to Milan, where he became a friend of the painter Stefano Bersani (Melegnano 1872 - Lora, 1914) and shared his studio. He was interested in both painting and etching, producing around 650 plates with architectural views but also landscapes. He exhibited his works, etchings and paintings, at almost all the Brera and Venice biennials, as well as in Rome, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Athens and Munich. King Leopold I of Belgium was a passionate collector. In 1910, together with Adolfo De Carolis, Vico Viganò and others, he founded the Italian Association of Acquafortists and Engravers, which marked the return of the art of engraving in Italy. In 1942 he moved to Lake Orta, drawing most of his subjects from there. His work as a photographer since the end of the 19th century is also of considerable interest. This plate is an example of the skill with which the artist was able to calibrate the clamps to obtain plays of light created with a deep, decisive sign. In front of a tall trunk with bare branches stands the silhouette of a shepherd almost completely enveloped by the shadow of the tree, the two elements merged into a single profile. Only his right arm is illuminated, reflecting the white of his shirt sleeve, and we see his hand resting on a stick. All around is his flock of sheep grazing on the grass. A low wall divides this area from the background where, amidst the rich vegetation, we can make out the roofs and outlines of the houses occupying a rise, from which a bell tower and a dome stand out. At the bottom, beyond the pencil engraving: Casanova Carlo/1915. Excellent impression on ivory paper with a glazed background effect. Very good state of preservation. Wide margins beyond the copperplate stop. In the lower white margin there is a dry stamp of the Associazione Italiana Acquafortisti ed Incisori, Milan. Bibliography: A. Bombelli, I pittori cremaschi, Milan 1957. Amelia Parati, Carlo Casanova; the engravings, Milan 199.
