Antique Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting the philosophers Heraclitus and Democritus in Caravaggesque style. Nice sized painting with refined subject, for antique dealers, interior decorators and collectors of ancient art. Philosophers represented with grotesque expressions of remarkable pictorial quality. Democritus laughs at worries and takes life lightly. Heraclitus, on the other hand, weeps over the fate of mankind. Modern wood and plaster frame, carved, chiselled and gilded in bronze (see photo). Work that has undergone a conservative restoration, re-tinting and colour restoration in several points (see photo). Overall in good condition with some signs of restoration. Light painting H 46 x W 55 cm.
