Item description

Innovative and original ceramic vase; it is made of clay and finished with a special coloured glaze that makes the object particularly attractive; the vase has an unusual and strange shape that emphasises its volume, while the side holes and the jagged edge give lightness and plasticity to the whole; a small octagonal base subtly lifts the piece from the surface on which it rests; the body of the vase is an off-white with slight tobacco-coloured nuances, a combination preferred by its creator: Giovanni Bertoncello. It was produced between 1969 and 1974 by the company Bertoncello Ceramiche to a design by Giovanni Bertoncello in collaboration with the well-known artistic innovator Roberto Rigon. Bertoncello Ceramiche was founded in 1956 in Schiavon, in the province of Vicenza (Italy) by the partners Lini, Marco Pizzato, and Giovanni Bertoncello, under the name of "LPB". It soon changed its name to "Bertoncello Ceramiche d'Arte" and the management remained the sole responsibility of Giovanni Bertoncello who, thanks to his artistic and entrepreneurial skills, brought the company great success both in Italy and on the foreign market, so much so that in the early seventies the factory employed over 30 people. Thanks to the experience gained, Bertoncello ceramics soon became a solid reality that stood out from the many competing companies. Unfortunately, not much is known about the company because all the catalogues and archives were destroyed when the company closed in 1999. The shapes of Bertoncello's ceramics are often very sculptural and geometric and look like small studies or maquettes for imposing modernist sculptures yet to be built, recalling the works of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and the architecture of the time. The painter and ceramist Roberto Rigon was born in Friola di Pozzoleone, in the province of Vicenza, in 1929. Already devoted to drawing and painting, he attended the "Regia Scuola d'Arte per la Ceramica" in Nove for a short period, as a pupil of Giovanni Petucco and Andrea Parini. At the age of eighteen he began working at the 'S.I.C.A.' factory. After some experience at other factories in the Vicenza area, he began a fruitful collaboration with 'Bertoncello Ceramiche d'Arte'. Together with Giovanni Bertoncello, he carried out pictorial and sculptural research with lines featuring geometric references and characterised above all by colour thanks to the skilful use of enamels, thus creating unique and unrepeatable objects. The object is in excellent condition. Measures diameter 34 cm, height 16 cm.
