Item description

A rational and massive pair of round ashtrays; each one was carved from a single block of Santafiora stone; the craftsman drew the shapes to be made on the faces of the block, then carried out an initial roughing with diamond discs, intuitively giving the proportions of the two objects; then, wetting the stone with water to soften the material slightly, he began the manual work with special metal tools, removing the excess material, trying not to hit the veins because this would have risked breaking the stone; He then smoothed the objects with a file and sandpaper to make them smooth and define their shape. The last operation was polishing, first with fine-grained sandpaper, then with very fine sand mixed with water and finally with natural acid products (sulphur powder and oxalic acid) to give the velvety effect that can only be achieved by hand. The two ashtrays were made between 1969 and 1971 in a workshop in the municipality of Manciano (Grosseto), an important area for the extraction and working of Santafiora stone, which takes its name from the stream that flows at the foot of the quarries. The ancient Etruscan Tuscia, today Alto Lazio and Maremma Toscana, boasts an orographic system rich in stone that makes it a unique basin in the world. In the heart of this territory, and of the history that accompanies it, is the extraction of Santafiora stone; the large basins of the quarries guarantee uniform quantitative and qualitative standards of the materials extracted, both in terms of colour and physical-mechanical characteristics. The stone extracted here, in large blocks, is guaranteed by history, as it was already used in the past for the construction of major works, such as the Roman theatre of Ferento (Viterbo-Italy) and the famous "City of the Popes" (Viterbo-Italy) and is now in demand throughout the world for important and prestigious buildings. Santafiora stone, formed about 20 million years ago, comes in different varieties, but all with the same geological and technical-mechanical characteristics; these stones are not affected by the action of external agents such as smog, frost, acid rain, saltiness and can be used in all kinds of climatic and environmental conditions. Our ashtrays are made of Santafiora Dorata stone, a material used in luxury furnishings, with a colour tending towards gold accompanied by typical brown veins that create refined designs, patterns and unique shapes. It is a stone, particularly suitable for floor and wall coverings, which personalises and gives rooms a refined elegance. Pietra Dorata is also widely used in works of art, fireplace columns, fountains, solids, frames and luxury art objects. Santafiora stone is also ideal for creating furnishing solutions, designed to embellish the home by adding functionality and style, when it comes to natural stone objects you can therefore range from large objects to smaller ones with a purely decorative purpose but always with suggestive and natural polychrome effects that, however, in the name of simplicity, embellish and personalise your home. The ashtrays are in excellent condition. Size large diameter 14.5 cm, height cm., small diameter 12.5 cm, height cm.3.
