4 S34 cantilever chairs by Mart Stam, 1960s
Set of 4 office chairs "Cantilever S34" designed by Mart Stam (1926). The S34 STAM chair with armrests has a 25 mm diameter tubular steel frame, 2 mm thick, chromed and mirror-polished. The frame consists of continuous frame and two tubular arms, one right and one left in which the backrest and seat upholstery are inserted The armrests are two rectangles made of bent iron and covered with full-grain leather with visible stitching thread. Under the seat they hold two chrome-plated adjustable arched tie rods in draft. The backrest and seat of the S34 STAM chair are made of full-grain leather are formed by two layers of leather coupled and stitched with visible thread. This chair is the first example in design history of a "cantilever" chair characterized by only two legs. Already in 1925 Dutch designer Mart Stam had experimented with the assembly of gas tubes, thus initiating what was to be a revolutionary new chair concept.
