Chinese hand-woven silk tapestry with birds among cherry blossoms, early 20th century
Very rare 20th century silk framed tapestry made in China, beautifully hand-woven in every detail. The rectangular frame is made of gilded wood, with signs of wear and tear due to use and age. The central tapestry is pure ochre silk, very beautiful and warm, suitable for decorating walls and adding warmth to the home. The tapestry was placed on canvas and framed, which means it must have belonged to someone important, perhaps a noble family. The canvas features hand-woven embroidery in greenish silk that creates an inner frame, around which six white flowers are arranged on each side. The scene depicts herons intent on flying, amidst familiar flowers and cherry blossoms. Every single detail is entirely hand-sewn, even the grass. The tapestry has very neutral colours: grey-brown and white for the birds, while the flowers favour colours such as ivory and fuchsia. The tapestry is wonderful and is suitable for true lovers of Chinese art.
